Campton United SC Alumni Spotlight

Player Name: Ryan Stackhouse

College/University: University of Notre Dame ‘19

What has your experience been like in college? My time at Notre Dame has been the best four years of my life. Classes are extremely challenging yet rewarding. As a Finance major, I had a few smaller internships as a freshman and sophomore and then I interned last summer at Jefferies, a full-service investment bank in New York City. They extended me an offer to return, so I’ll be back with them full-time in the Fall. That has taken a lot of the pressure off of senior year, and I’ve been able to enjoy myself a lot more as a result. Socially, I’m surrounded by intelligent, spiritual, outgoing people who love to have a good time when the work is done, which is just what I wanted in a school. I was able to travel abroad to Dublin the Spring of my Junior Year, which I recommend to anyone heading to college.

How did Campton United SC help you get to where you are now? There’s a number of lessons I learned during my career at Campton that were crucial in helping me break into Wall Street. The first is discipline. On most days at work this summer I got into the office around 9am and left past 9pm, sometimes even past midnight. This lifestyle requires a lot of discipline to avoid burning out, including eating right, exercising whenever I can get the chance and being extremely proactive about time management. I learned a lot of these lessons at Campton having to juggle classes, practice and traveling for MDL on the weekends. The second is persistence. I initially got deferred at Notre Dame and wrote a letter to admissions practically begging to be let in (it worked!). When I was applying for jobs, I was rejected from about 8 investment banks before I got my first offer. It would have been really easy to give up and settle for something less in both of those scenarios, but I was able to look back at my time at Campton when I came in without a lot of talent at u11 and made the second team. I worked hard, benefitted from working with a great coaching staff, and ended up captaining our MDL team by u17, learning the power of persistence and patience.

What was your favorite moment from your time at Campton United? We were in the third game of the group stage of the Disney Showcase and needed to win our last game to advance. In a muddy back and forth game we scored with about 90 seconds left to advance to the final. The video is out there on Youtube somewhere and it gives me the chills every time I watch it.

What has been your favorite moment in college so far? Each and every home football game tailgate - anyone who’s seen a soccer match in Europe knows that being in a stadium with 85,000 rowdy fans never gets old.
